Shop Class was developed with the idea in mind of bringing the knowledge and skills that we all use to learn in shop class to the student’s house. Shop class was a fun and engaging class when I was in school and it laid a foundation for the business I have today. Here is the story behind “Shop Class”
Shop Class has been developed by Micah Robinson a professional woodworker and cabinet maker. Micah spent his younger years tinkering and building things in his grandfather’s shop, learning from him and his father the way to handle tools and make something out of nothing. After some years playing college baseball and 5 years as a teacher, Micah began his woodworking career when his wife wanted a dining room table. When Micah saw the price those tables were going for he told her “I can build you that for a quarter of the price”. A post on social media and the hobby became a business. Micah has been the owner and head carpenter for Crafted In Florida since 2016 and has built some quite astounding pieces.
While the business is still thriving today serving the Central Florida area with custom built pieces the idea of passing on the knowledge to the next generation came to the front of mind when Micah and his wife welcomed their son into the world. With the younger Robinson starting school Micah realized that what he did for a living was not being taught to kids anymore, and while he can solve that problem for his own son by bring him to the shop to build things. Why not solve the problem for other kids at the same time. “Shop Class” is a collection of courses made for all beginners, but structured for children ages 8 and up to learn the things needed to be a skillful craftsman.
Even if a job in the trades is not the plan for you or your child having the knowledge of how to make things and fix things around the house is beneficial both financially and also as a matter of confidence. As a provider there are few better feelings that when something is broken and you can come fix it and “save the day”. These courses will walk you through the 25+ lessons that come with short compact videos for each and the 8 build projects and/or activities to put the skills and knowledge to the test.
Tools are required for these courses, and a list is provided in the course description with expected cost. Build projects materials are also costed out so you will know what to expect. This course is designed to take roughly a semester to complete for children, but it is self paced and can be completed on your own timing.
